Pre- and Post- Independence Day Celebrations

By vivi

Pre- and Post- Independence Day Celebrations

After being occupied by colonialist for 3.5 centuries, finally Indonesians had released themselves from hardship and suffering. On 17th August 1945, our first President, Soekarno proclaimed Indonesia’s independence to all over the world. In order to commemorate our laudable heroes, besides execute the national independence ceremony every year, we do also have pre- and post- Independence Day celebration.

During July, you will be able to see some small groups of people marching in the town. You may think that they are working out but in fact, they are preparing themselves for the marching competition which is one of the pre-independence day celebrations. This event is regularly conducted a week before our enormous national day. Every school must send a representative group and each group will be given a number that the leader of the team must stick on the front of shirt. What are so unique about the marching competition in Tanjungpinang, a small city in Indonesia? Every group has their own theme. They will appear differently with their competitors in the way of dressing. They may dress like a hermaphrodite, Miss World, phantom, and etc. Usually the leader will lead the team by saying “kiri, kanan, kiri, kanan. . .” which mean “left, right, left, right. . .” in order to keep his/her team in a neat row. Moreover, sometimes they sing songs melodiously while marching. The spectators will be waiting for their favourite group to pass by and give them a glass of mineral water to drink or even shower them with water to invigorate them from the scorching sun. No matter how blistering the day is, spectators still enjoy watching the marching.

As the Independence Day is nearer, a night before the day, thousands of citizens in Tanjungpinang gather together and stand in the roadside to see the torch parade. Either you are civil servant, teacher, student, or even entrepreneur; you are welcomed to participate in this event. All of the participants will start in a point that has been pointed and come to an end where the mayor of the city and ministers welcome the arrival of them. This event has a distinctive meaning for Indonesians to remember our heroes who had sacrificed their life for the nation. During one and a half hours, the town will be lighten up by thousands of torches.

Another big celebration of our Independence Day is national parade. All of the schools and communities will take part in this event. It is the one and only post-independence day celebration in the town but it is also the most joyous event to all people. Regardless of how busy the citizens are, they will still spare their time and go to watch the parade for almost 4 hours. Spectators only need to stand or even sit on the roadside to watch the parade. What is the pull factor that makes this event become so attracting? For sure, it is cultural exhibition. This event is just like an exhibition that shows the culture of races in Indonesia and also other countries. Furthermore, it does show the background of Indonesia, education system, types of occupation that are offered, schools co-curricular, and etc. Students have to wear the dresses that had been selected by the teachers, for example: Javanese traditional dress, Eskimo traditional dress, primary school uniform, doctor uniform and so on. By watching the parade, spectators will be able to appreciate the culture of Indonesia and enhance their knowledge.

All in all, pre- and post- Independence Day celebrations should not only be the leisure activities but they must be able to remind all of the Indonesians that the freedom which we have today came from every drop of our heroes’ blood. Enjoy and understand the special meaning of these events.

Planning my holiday balloon ride over Bagan in Myanmar

By Benjamin

I am planning my holiday balloon ride over an ancient city of Bagan in my own country, Myanmar. I had visited there last 15 years ago but many changes are taking place dramatically so I think that this is a trip of a lifetime, memorable, exciting, the high and thrill moment, I can’t wait to see that. And being the most breathtaking experience for me and what I have always wanted to do for many years. I do heard and seen hot air balloons in magazines, movies, news and newspapers but most of them are in abroad, but I can ride hot air balloon in central Myanmar nowadays.

Firstly, I need to describe about the demographic of the location. The balloon ride will take place in magnificent an ancient Kingdom City of Bagan, an also known as the city of four million pagodas, stupas and temples, the birth place of Theravada Buddhism is located on the eastern bank of Majestic Irrawaddy River. It is only a forty two square kilo meters land in central Myanmar. In former days, the pilgrims are allowed to climb on the top vestibules or terrace from where view the mystical panorama of environ, but the time were over. But we do have another way of watching or exploring with bird-eyed view to thousands of pagodas and temples which is supported by hot air balloon. There are many historic, cultural and heritage places in Bagan. It’s also famous with locals and foreigners. Balloon flights take off daily from October through to the end of March only on weekdays.

Secondly, I might need to prepare for inside out of the ride, Apart from my own research, I do know that I might need proper knowledge of piloting, the inflation of the balloon, lift off and landing of balloon, photographing and entertainment onboard. Some flights are providing champagne but our Myanmar’s feels bad because we are travelling over the religious sites. Expected travelling time is an average of 45 minutes of flight duration is expected, however the entire experience will last about 2 and half hours. The entire experience would be around 3 hours from start to finish, including hands-on launch, an hour-long flight, refreshments and transport. Some special flights are last longer from dawn to sunset and costly.

Thirdly, I must have enough budgets for the ride, must learned rules and regulation of flight before step in , hot air balloon ride is quite cheap in Myanmar compare to the other countries. It would cost it nearly US$ 280 per person and a typical flight will include 4-8 people. Children must be over 6 years old and 140 centimeters tall to be allowed to fly. Women who are pregnant are not permitted to take balloon rides. This hot air balloons are insured for two million dollars, third party, and passenger liability. However, if you are interested in a private, romantic flight, they offer couples-only flights as well on site. I also notice that need to dress comfortably depending upon the day's weather conditions. Because a hot air balloon would travels at the same speed as the air around it, we might experience much warmer inside. I found out that the pilots and technicians are qualified and registered in the UK, balloons are built to the highest standards of the British aerospace industry.

At last, I can’t wait to fly on the balloon to imagine floating over thousand years old pagodas and the mighty Irrawaddy River, as the sun sinks slowly behind distant mountains. I do smells of how tasty local cuisines and delights are waiting for me to explore. Bagan has inspired many visitors to Myanmar for centuries. One of the most remarkable sights in South East Asia, ancient temples landscape as far as the eye can see. This is a unique opportunity to see our beloved ancient Kingdom of my country, as it has never been seen before.

Should a woman’s place be home?

By Elsa

After reading the title, I believe that many people would frown and say no loudly especially ladies.

This is a modern society rather than the traditional, stereotyped situation any more. Most women have their own their jobs to do at the offices and already been economic independence although maybe they have family to support, children to take care, husband to look after or chores to do.

Male tends to think women should just stay at home and do chores and lead a easy and simple lifestyle in the countries which has a long history and conservative culture. This type of culture leads them think that man is the god and should support the family and govern everything without doubt. The status of female used to be very low even today at those countries or regions.

However, the world is changing. More and more female get good education than ever before. They have the ideas and rights to pursuit the freedom, independence and fairness .It is not the world for just male any longer.

Since more women got better chances to get educated, the number of female who has occupations is also increasing at many fields.Almost every field, females can also fit very well, which break the cycle that women can only do something housework-related.In some areas, females have even more talents and advantages for some kind of jobs.No second to men obviously.

Once again, should a woman’s place be home? Absolutely not. Dreaming a ideal lifestyle and trying hard to get what is really important to oneself is the universal and common mind. Female is such a beautiful sex that shouldn’t just stay at home and waste the youth and time.

My dear women friends,if you have your satisfied jobs, fabulous. If you are still stuck at the chores of family, then I suggest you going outside and have a look of the world now.Learn anything new to you and lead a happy life as you dream.Get independent in every part of daily life. All of those does not mean you can’t balance your job and family life, instead you would do better for both at the same time.

The Harvest Festival in Kerala, India

By Arun Dash

Onam is the biggest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. Onam Festival falls during the Malayali month of Chingam (Aug - Sep) and marks the homecoming of legendary King Mahabali. Carnival of Onam lasts for ten days and brings out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. Intricately decorated Pookalam, ambrosial Onasadya, breathtaking Snake Boat Race and exotic Kaikottikali dance are some of the most remarkable features of Onam - the harvest festival in Kerala.

A flower carpet called 'Pookalam' is laid in front of every house to welcome the advent of the vanquished king, and earthen mounds representing Mahabali and Vishnu are placed in the dung-plastered courtyards. Traditional rituals are performed followed by a lavish feast called 'Sadhya'. Onam also means new clothes for the whole family, sumptuous home-cooked delicacies on plantain leaf and the lingering aroma of the sweet payasam.

Onam or Thiruonam originated as a joyous annual reminiscence of the golden rule of King Mahabali, a mythical king, who ruled Kerala a very long time ago. It recalls the sacrifice of the great king, his true devotion to God, his human pride and his ultimate redemption. Onam welcomes the spirit of a great king, and assures him that his people are happy and wish him well.

One of the main attractions of Onam, is the 'Vallamkali' or boat races of Karuvatta, Payippad, Aranmula and Kottayam. Hundreds of oarsmen row traditional boats to the rhythm of drums and cymbals. These long graceful Snake Boats called 'Chundans' are named after their exceedingly long hulls and high sterns that resemble the raised hood of a cobra.

Although this festival has its origin in Hindu mythology Onam is for all people of all class and creed. Hindus, Muslims and Christians, the wealthy and the downtrodden, all celebrate Onam with equal fervor. The secular character of Onam is peculiar to this land where unity had always coexisted with diversity, especially during festivals, when people come together to celebrate life's unlimited joys.

In the Eiffel Tower, tourists can have a full view of the full Paris. The Louvre museum keeps countless cultural heritages which could be dated back to thousand years ago.

Tertiary, one of the reasons why France is such a popular a travelling destination is because its food and wine. Not only the French has many world top-end red wine chateaus, but also it has a lot of high class restaurants which offer the tourist with fantastic French cuisines.

The Dragon Boat Festival

By Vincent

The 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar year is an important day for the Chinese people. The day is called Duan Wu Festival, or Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated everywhere in China.

There are several different explanations for the festival’s origin. The most accepted is that the festival honors Qu Yuan, a famous poet and virtuous official of the Chu Kingdom.

When the king refused his advice and the capital of the kingdom was occupied by invaders, Qu wrote his final poem beside Miluo River in today’s Hunan. He then drowned himself on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. Saddened over the patriotic poet’s death, people tossed rice and meat into the river to feed the fish, which would protect Qu’s body. This later on turned into the custom of eating Zong Zi.

Ancient people believed dragons controlled the rivers and the sea, and they worried that Qu’s spirit would be harmed by dragons. They built boats shaped like dragons and held races on the river to the thunderous beat of drums to warn dragons not to damage Qu’s spirit. The race eventually became a tradition.

Other customs attached to the Dragon Boat Festival include drinking rice wine on this day. The wine is believed to make people healthy and keep insects and snakes away.

Today, the dragon boat festival is celebrated among the chinese. The dragon boat race is now an international game

A woman's place is at home

By  Joyce Kho

Traditionally, men were the sole breadwinner of the family while women would stay at home and look after the family. Throughout history, women had generally fewer legal rights and career opportunities as compared to men. Men were often defined in terms of occupations whereas women were defined in terms of family. However, in the modern society today, especially in the more developed countries, it will be absolutely absurd for people to possess this mindset. Personally, I do not believe that a woman’s place is solely at home.

Women can be as capable as their male counterparts. Throughout these years, women have desperately fought for their own rights. They wanted to work, they wanted to study, they wanted to have more freedom in decision making and they wanted the same rights as men. They organised many feminist movements that started way in 18th century, they burnt the bras in 1960s as a symbol of freedom--all these were just to exclaim to the whole world that they were equally as capable as the men. Indeed, they won the battle. In today’s world, they are no longer conceived as inferior as compared to their counterparts. Perhaps there are still some disputes here and there, but generally women have finally had their own basic rights. Women may be different in terms of physical build, but their brain are capable to function as good as men. In developed countries, everybody is entitled to education rights, and with education, one is able to prove their capability through various tests. Workplace is more accepting towards women. They recognise the fact that they can be as valuable as men. Research has shown that more women are starting to take up higher positions. Indeed, most families are going towards the double-income trend where both parties work and share the financial burden. All these are signs that woman’s place is no longer at home where they are only capable of looking after the family.

Women may have proved that they are as capable, but they are not able to shake off their responsibilities at home totally. Responsibility for family is always present. One still has to take care of housework and bring up their children. Some may leave these responsibilities to their house-keeper, but proper upbringing of a child is extremely important and should not totally leave to outsiders. Women need to recognise the fact that though right now they have fought their rights and are able to work together with men, they are actually engaging in multiple tasks. After work, they will still have to return home and perform their role as a mother. Their place is still at home after work. However, this should not be woman’s job solely. Men have to share the same responsibility as women. After all, family belongs to two people, not one. Therefore, woman’s place is still at home, though not totally.

In conclusion, the world cannot be run by arrogant and intrusive men. Traditional social status had made women feel inferior. It was as if they existed to serve men and care for the children. Today’s society is able to strike a healthy balance between men and women, work and family. They are able to rebuild the pride and confidence of women. As long as women are able to strike a balance and not neglect their family as a result of the new social status, there should not be a problem. All in all, a woman’s is still at home, but should not be solely at home.
